PJ Brown's journey into yoga began 13 years ago as a natural transition from a lifetime of dance and baton twirling. After earning a B.A. in International Studies and Spanish, she became a certified yoga instructor at the Yandara Yoga Institute in Baja, California. PJ then spent three years immersed in Costa Rica's yoga scene, teaching various styles, including restorative and intermediate Vinyasa and Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga. While in Costa Rica, she discovered the transformative power of surfing that forever changed her life to embrace the ebb and flow of waves across the globe. In 2017, PJ Brown became a Surf Facilitator with the Groundswell Community Project, where she discovered the profound impact of surf therapy and empowerment for women from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Groundswell's trauma-informed approach resonated deeply with PJ, inspiring her to integrate their principles into her practice. Since then, PJ has been instrumental in expanding Groundswell's reach, sharing her expertise in surfing across diverse landscapes and waters, including San Diego, New Zealand, Costa Rica, and Huanchaco, Peru.
Seeking to deepen her understanding of bodywork and healing, she ventured to Thailand for rock climbing, where she also attained her 90-hour Thai Yoga Massage certification. She moved to Crested Butte, CO, to further pursue studies in massage therapy at Mountainheart School of Bodywork and Transformation. She mastered various techniques there, including neuromuscular, Swedish, assisted stretching, pre-natal, body metaphor healing, and trauma recovery. Expanding her expertise, she delved into Ashiatsu (barefoot massage), crafting a unique whole-body experience that blends Thai, Ashiatsu, and Acropeutics. Her approach is deeply personalized, integrating Eastern and Western modalities with compassion to sustain her clients' physical well-being and support their meaningful activities.
Upon settling in Colorado, PJ transformed her love for water sports into guiding whitewater stand-up paddleboarding, finding solace in the rush of river currents reminiscent of her beloved ocean waves. Her quest to connect with the wild mountain waters took a profound turn in 2019 when she delved into river surfing with the Gunnison surf community. Influenced by Groundswell and her commitment to gender inclusivity in the surf line-up, PJ was driven to create a safe therapeutic space for women in the Gunnison Valley to embrace the invigorating art of river surfing. She began her Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and later, the River Surf Sister Sessions emerged. These sessions embody Groundswell Community’s evidence-based surf therapy curriculum, a blend of positive change psychology interwoven within body-centered expressive arts therapy. Through her work, PJ empowers womxn to rediscover the innate playfulness and fluidity within their beings, guiding them to gracefully navigate the unique waves of life, both in and out of the water.
